The COnventional animator we have use a 125 volt coil motor to turn a cam
which switches contacts back and forth...Heavy, but reliable. I have never
seen one fail, so I would have to say that there only downfall is there size
and weight.  I have seen two styles, the first merly blinks (flashes)
voltage, while the second relayed the signal between a and b . The speed
could be altered, and there in the duration of time between pulses.
