There is an article on these tubes (often called "Geissler Tubes") in SIGNS of 
the Times (See "Neon techniques: early history of the gas discharge tube"/Jan 
1994, p. 36). Although I don't see a paddlewheel among the 10 photos, there 
are leaves, a butterfly, etc. The photos are from one of the world's largest 
collections of gass discharge tubes, which is owned by Jim and Felicia 
Kreuzer, Elma, NY.
